Planning a destination wedding in Mexico? Which ‘Mexico’ is for you?

Options for styles of Mexico destination weddings.

When couples tell me they want to get married in Mexico, I usually pause before we talk about resorts.

Not because Mexico is hard to plan. Quite the opposite. Mexico is one of the strongest destination wedding choices for couples because it offers great resort options, strong all-inclusive infrastructure, and a wide range of wedding styles.

But “Mexico” can mean very different things.

A wedding in Cancún or Riviera Maya will not feel the same as a wedding in Los Cabos. A celebration in Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit brings a completely different mood again. The beaches, landscapes, budgets, flight patterns, resort styles and guest experiences can vary a lot by region.

That is why the first decision is not really which resort you like best. It’s which version of Mexico fits the wedding week you are trying to create?

For many couples, Cancún and the Riviera Maya are what they picture first: warm Caribbean water, lush tropical scenery, lots of all-inclusive resorts, and a classic destination-wedding atmosphere. This area can be a great fit if you want plenty of resort options, strong value, and an easy vacation feel for your guests. It is also one of the regions I often look at for groups that need a wide range of room options and resort styles.

Los Cabos has a very different personality. It is dramatic, polished and visually striking, with desert landscapes, ocean views and a more elevated feel. Cabo can be beautiful for sunset ceremonies and couples who want a luxury mood, great dining and a setting that feels a little more cinematic. But it is also important to understand that not every beach in Cabo is swimmable. Strong surf and undertow are real factors in some areas, so if easy ocean swimming matters to you or your guests, that needs to be part of the conversation from the start.

Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit offer something different again: more town-meets-beach charm, mountain views, culture, nightlife and opportunities for guests to explore beyond the resort. This can be a wonderful fit for couples who want their wedding trip to feel connected to the destination itself, not only the resort.

Before we narrow down properties, I like to get clear on the experience you want your guests to have:
  • Do you picture a classic beach vacation or something more elevated and dramatic?
  • Is ocean swimming a must-have?
  • Do you want guests to stay mostly on resort, or explore restaurants, nightlife and town life?
  • Is the priority value, luxury or a balance of both?
  • Are most guests travelling from the same place, or from different cities?
  • Does your group need lots of room categories and price points?
  • Are you hoping for quiet privacy, lively energy or a bit of both?
These answers usually point us in the right direction quickly.

The all-inclusive piece is another reason Mexico works so well for wedding groups. For guests, it keeps costs more predictable. For couples, it makes the week easier to coordinate overall. Meals, drinks and on-site activities are already included in the experience, so guests can relax instead of constantly worrying about how much everything will cost.

Timing matters too. December through April usually brings the most dependable weather, but it is also peak season, so pricing is higher. May and November can be excellent value months. Late summer into October can bring more weather risk on the Caribbean side, while Cabo is generally drier and Puerto Vallarta’s rainy season often comes in shorter bursts rather than full washout days.

Beach expectations are worth discussing early as well. Sargassum can affect parts of Cancún and the Riviera Maya, depending on the season and the shoreline. Cabo has gorgeous coastlines, but not all beaches are safe for swimming. In Puerto Vallarta, sargassum is less of an issue, but beach style can vary from calm and swimmable to better suited for surfing, wave play or scenery.

None of these things should scare couples away from Mexico. They are simply the details that help us choose well.

A beautiful resort matters. But the right region in Mexico sets the tone for the whole wedding week. It affects how your guests arrive, how they spend their days, what the celebration feels like, and how easy the experience is for everyone involved.

So before you fall in love with a resort photo, start with the bigger question.
