Planning a destination wedding in the Dominican?
Let’s make it easy-breezy from the first big decision. The Dominican Republic is an excellent choice for a destination wedding if you want beautiful beaches, trusted all-inclusive brands and solid value. It also offers an unexpected amount of variety with classic beach-and-resort territory and party vibes or more refined experiences. My job is to match your vision, guest list, and budget with the right region and resort, then handle the travel details that keep everything running smoothly.
Why work with me?
I’m an award-winning destination wedding planner backed by Liz Moore Destination Weddings, and (best of all), I’m paid by partner resorts and suppliers. My travel planning support is complimentary!

Which part of the Dominican Republic fits your wedding best?
When a couple says they’re considering the Dominican Republic, I usually start with three questions:
What’s the vibe?
Do you want a classic resort feel, something quieter and more polished, or a destination with a little more local character?

How important is the beach?
That question matters here. The DR is known for gorgeous white-sand beaches, especially around Punta Cana and Bávaro, but beach conditions vary by coastline and season.
What’s the comfort zone for budget?
Not just yours – your guests’, too. Some resorts are much better value for smaller weddings. Others make more sense when you’re bringing a bigger group and can unlock better perks.

Dominican Republic wedding primer:
The three main destination wedding regions.

Punta Cana and Bávaro
Best for: classic beach weddings, broad resort choice and easy airport access.
This is the Dominican that most couples picture first: long white beaches, turquoise water and lots of all-inclusive options across a wide range of budgets and styles. It’s also an easy transfer from Punta Cana International Airport.

La Romana
Best for: quieter luxury, fewer resorts, and a more refined feel.
Looking for something calmer and a little more tucked away? Check out La Romana. It’s known for upscale resorts, golf and access to places like Altos de Chavón and Bayahibe. The tradeoff is a longer transfer and fewer resort options than Punta Cana.

Puerto Plata
Best for: north-coast scenery, history and a different kind of destination feel.
Puerto Plata appeals to couples who want more than just a beach-and-resort backdrop. It brings a bit more city, history and nature into the mix. It can also be a practical option for some East Coast departure points.
In real life, these are usually the make-or-break factors:
- budget per guest (and how flexible your group is)
- beach and swimming expectations
- airport convenience and transfer time
- beach ceremony or a terrace / garden / rooftop ceremony
- resort style: sleek and modern, or lush and tropical
- guest count
This is where good resort advice really matters. A resort that looks perfect on paper can be poor value for a 60-person wedding, or brilliant for a 30-person one. I help you sort through that before you’re buried in tabs, wedding package PDFs and vague promises.
For most destination wedding groups, all-inclusive is the easiest fit here – not just for price clarity, but for the overall experience.
- Predictable costs: Guests know what they’re committing to before they book.
- Strong value: The Dominican Republic often gives couples access to familiar resort brands and a high-end tropical feel at a lower nightly cost than comparable options elsewhere.
- Bigger resorts with more built in: The DR is often more of a true resort vacation. Many properties are large, activity-rich, and designed to keep guests happily occupied on site.
- More flexibility for mixed budgets: I usually structure room blocks to keep the most affordable room category available, while still leaving room for upgrades for guests who want them.
If you want the best mix of weather, comfort and value, timing matters.
The driest stretch is generally December through April, which is why it’s also the busiest and most expensive period. The official tourism board lists December to April as the best time to visit Punta Cana, and notes that the country’s hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
For many couples, the sweet spots are April, May, November, and early December. Those shoulder-season windows can offer better rates without pushing too far into the higher-risk weather months.
If you’re looking for a wedding later in summer or into fall, I’ll help you choose a resort and venue setup with a smart backup plan.
Dominican Republic or Mexico?
If you’re torn between the two, the biggest differences usually come down to beach priorities, departure city and how you want the trip to feel.
The Dominican Republic can absolutely compete with Mexico on beach beauty. It can also be an excellent value, especially if you want a familiar all-inclusive brand at a slightly lower price point. Depending on the region, Mexico can offer more off-resort exploring and cultural sightseeing. The Dominican Republic tends to be more of a stay-at-the-resort vacation.
Which sounds more like your dream wedding destination?

Straight talk on beaches, swimming, and seaweed.
If beach time is part of your wedding vision, this is worth understanding upfront.

Punta Cana and Bávaro
This is the classic postcard version of the DR: long white sand, clear water, and that big tropical-resort feel. It’s beautiful – but it's not immune to sargassum. Seaweed conditions can vary by season and shoreline, so I look closely at resort location, beach-cleanup standards, and what the property offers if the beach is not at its best.
La Romana
La Romana tends to appeal to couples who want a quieter beach experience and fewer of the variables that come with the more exposed east-coast zones. It also has a more polished, low-key feel overall.
Exposed beaches like Macao
Some beaches in the broader Punta Cana area feel wilder and more natural, but they can also have stronger surf. That makes for great ocean views, but variable swimming conditions. The official tourism board specifically highlights Macao for surfing.
Quick FAQs
Nothing! My travel planning support is complimentary; I’m compensated through partner resorts and suppliers.
No. Punta Cana and Bávaro are often the starting point, but I also help couples compare La Romana, Puerto Plata, and other options when they’re a better fit.
You’ll never see all the behind-the-scenes work… but you’ll absolutely feel the results. I’ll provide resort shortlists based on your vibe, guest profile and priorities, and resort contract support to get you the best deal and ensure there’s no surprise fees. I'll also offer guest travel support so you’re not fielding questions about flights and room types, coordinate airport transfers for you and your guests and provide general problem-solving in real time.
I keep the most affordable room categories in play wherever possible, then layer in upgrade options for guests who want a more premium stay.
That gets built into the shortlist right away. Resort layout, room location, and distance between venues all matter.
Water-based excursions are always popular – catamarans, snorkelling, and island day trips are big draws in Punta Cana and La Romana.
