Planning a destination wedding in Mexico?

Let’s make it feel easy from the very first decision. Mexico is full of incredible destination wedding settings – but it delivers vastly different experiences depending on location. My job is to match your vision (and your guest list) with the right region and resort, then manage the travel and group details so you can focus on the fun.

I’m an award-winning destination wedding planner, backed by Liz Moore Destination Weddings, and my travel planning support is complimentary – I’m paid by partner resorts and suppliers.

Which Mexico are you picturing?

When a couple says Mexico, I always start with three quick questions, because the answers usually point us to the right coast immediately:

What’s the vibe?

Lush jungle-meets-beach? Desert luxury? A charming, walkable town with culture and nightlife?

Are you beach people?

Not all beaches (or swimming conditions) are the same – especially depending on the region and time of year.

What’s the comfort zone for budget – yours and your guests’?

Some resorts are standout value for smaller groups; others reward larger guest counts with better perks and incentives.

Cancún and Riviera Maya

Best for: classic tropical destination-wedding energy, plenty of resort variety and good value.

Expect lush scenery, warm Caribbean water and tons of all-inclusive options from modern luxury to lively party resorts.

Sunny Los Cabos beach with turquoise water, rocky shoreline, and colourful buildings at the base of a mountain.

Los Cabos

Best for: elevated dining, dramatic views and desert-meets-ocean romance.

Cabo is spectacular for sunset ceremonies and luxe vibes, but not every beach is swimmable (currents can be intense). It’s often a higher price point.

Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

Best for: authentic Mexican charm, walkable towns, culture and mountain views.

Great for couples who want personality – and who love the idea of guests exploring beyond the resort.

What most couples really base the decision on.

In real life, these tend to be the make-or-break factors:

  • budget per guest (and how flexible your group is)
  • beach and swimming expectations
  • direct flight convenience
  • privacy vs. party energy
  • on-site amenities like swim-up bars, private plunge pools, etc.

If you’ve got a multi-generational group or a mix of affluent guests and budget-conscious friends, I’ll help you choose a resort that doesn’t force everyone into the same experience.

Why go all-inclusive for Mexico destination weddings?

For most destination wedding groups, all-inclusive is the smoothest choice; not just for budgeting, but for how the whole week feels for your guests. Here’s why it tends to work so well:

  • Predictable costs for everyone. Guests can commit with confidence, without wondering what meals, drinks or resort extras will add up to.
  • A more relaxed guest experience. When guests aren’t constantly pulling out their wallet, the trip feels lighter – more celebration and less calculation.
  • Easier group coordination. Shared dining options, included drinks and on-site activities make it simpler to keep everyone together (or let them do their own thing) without planning every detail.
Timing your Mexico destination wedding.

When it comes to timing a Mexico wedding, a few reliable seasonal patterns can help you choose dates with confidence.

  • December through April typically brings the most dependable weather – but it’s also peak season, so pricing is higher.
  • May and November are two of my favourite months for standout value. May is often hot and less rainy, while November is the perfect “escape Canada” reset before the holiday season kicks in.
  • Late summer into October can carry a higher hurricane risk on the Caribbean side, whereas Cabo is generally drier year-round and Puerto Vallarta’s rainy season tends to feel more like short bursts than day-long storms.  If you’re planning during a wetter season for scheduling reasons, I’ll help you choose venues and resorts where Plan B still feels like Plan A.

Straight talk on sargassum and swimmable beaches.

If beach time is part of your wedding vision, choosing the right destination starts with understanding what each destination realistically offers.

Cancún and Riviera Maya

This side of Mexico has the postcard-colour water many couples picture, but sargassum is the wildcard. It can vary by season and shoreline, even with active cleanup. I’ll help you choose resorts known for beach maintenance and strong backup plans, so the trip still feels beautiful if the beach is having an off week.

Los Cabos

Cabo delivers gorgeous ocean views, but not every beach is swimmable. Strong surf, rip currents and undertow are real factors, so beach access does not always mean safe swimming. If easy ocean swimming matters, I’ll steer you toward swimmable beaches and the right resort area – not just the prettiest coastline.

Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

PV has a more town-meets-beach feel, with mountains, culture and lots for guests to do off-resort. Unlike the Caribbean coast, it’s generally not a major sargassum destination. The bigger variable is beach type: some areas are calm and swimmable, while others are better for surfing, wave play or the view than for easy swimming.

Quick FAQs

What does it cost to work with you?

Nothing! My travel planning support is complimentary; I’m compensated through partner resorts and suppliers.

Do you only plan Mexico?

Mexico is one of my core specialties, especially for destination weddings and group travel. If you’re considering other destinations, such as the Dominican Republic or elsewhere, we can talk through that, too.

What kind of planning services do you offer?

You’ll never see all the behind-the-scenes work… but you’ll absolutely feel the results. I’ll provide resort shortlists based on your vibe, guest profile and priorities, and resort contract support to get you the best deal and ensure there’s no surprise fees. I'll also offer guest travel support so you’re not fielding questions about flights and room types, coordinate airport transfers for you and your guests and provide general problem-solving in real time.

What’s the typical budget per guest for destination weddings in Mexico?

A common range I see for guests is about $175–$300 USD per adult per night for all-inclusive (often higher for ultra-luxury). The biggest cost factors include:

  • Season and flight demand
  • Room category and how early guests book
  • Resort brand and wedding package inclusions
Do you recommend booking vacation packages or separate flight and resort bookings?

I typically recommend a group room rate where guests book flights and rooms separately. The advantage? Guests can control the trip length (five nights vs. seven can mean big savings for budget-conscious guests), or use points/air miles for flights if they want, or piggyback the vacation with an extra holiday.

We have a number of guests arriving at different times on different days? How do you keep airport transfers for everyone running smoothly?

No problem. I use a system that allows guests to upload their flight numbers and arrival/departure details, so the transfer is ready and waiting when they arrive.

Our wedding guest list will range from babies to seniors. How do you account for different mobility needs in the planning process?

This is a conversation we have in the initial resort selection stage. If your group has mobility concerns, then I’ll account for that in the shortlist of resorts that I recommend. This is where my firsthand knowledge of these resorts comes into play.

What if we already picked a Mexico resort?

Great – then I’ll focus on protecting you in the contract, managing the room block strategy, and ensuring smooth guest logistics.
